Product Description

Most guardian statues on the market are the same handful of Chinese figures repeated in resin. This one is different — a hand-carved Nghê, Vietnam's own guardian creature, carved from solid African Padauk by family artisans in Thường Tín village, Hanoi.

You can choose one Male Nghê, one Female Nghê, or a Pair of both Male & Female Nghê. The traditional distinction is simple: the Male Nghê has a horn, while the Female Nghê does not. Together, they form a balanced guardian pair.

If you know the Qilin or the Pixiu, think of the Nghê as their lesser-known Vietnamese cousin — a distinctly Vietnamese guardian with a warmer, more alert expression than either.

🌿 What Does the Nghê Symbolize?

The Nghê is a mythical guardian creature found at the gates of Vietnam's communal houses (đình), temples, and royal tombs — carved into rooftops, stone steps, and incense altars for centuries.

Although the Nghê shares the protective role of creatures such as the Chinese Pixiu and Qilin, it is its own distinctly Vietnamese creature, with its own iconography and cultural history.

The Nghê is traditionally given an alert, almost dog-like expression. Its ears point forward and its posture feels attentive rather than aggressively intimidating. Vietnamese guardian tradition emphasizes vigilance and loyalty — a guardian that watches carefully over a home or sacred space.

Placed at a threshold, the Nghê is believed to watch for what should not enter — misfortune, ill intention, and disorder — while allowing good fortune to pass freely.

For the modern home, the Nghê represents an idea that feels timeless: protection doesn't have to look hostile. It can simply look watchful, loyal, and present.

🌿 Male & Female Nghê — What Is the Difference?

This collection is available in three options:

  • Male Nghê — identifiable by the horn on its head, traditionally representing the male guardian
  • Female Nghê — without a horn, representing the female guardian
  • Male + Female Pair — both figures together, creating a traditional guardian pair and a visually balanced entrance display

If you're placing Nghê at an entrance or doorway, the pair is the most complete choice, while a single Male or Female Nghê works beautifully as an individual statement piece.

🌿 The Wood & The Craft: Why African Padauk?

African Padauk is a dense, durable hardwood with excellent dimensional stability. Freshly carved, it displays a vivid orange-red tone that naturally deepens and mellows with age into a richer brown.

Every cut on these Nghê statues is made by hand — chisel to wood, with no CNC assistance — by family artisans continuing a woodcarving tradition in Thường Tín village, Hanoi.

The layered mane, raised brow, curled tail, facial details, and horn of the Male Nghê are individually carved rather than produced from a mold. The subtle variations and slightly uneven texture visible in close-up photographs are not flaws — they are evidence of handwork.

🌿 Where to Place It

Traditionally, Nghê are positioned at an entrance facing outward, watching over whoever or whatever approaches. They also work beautifully beside a front door or entryway, a fireplace, a console table, a study or home office, or a prominent shelf or display area.

At approximately 17 inches tall, this is a statement guardian piece rather than a small decorative accent. The pair works especially well when placed together to frame an entrance, fireplace, or console.

🎁 Gifting: A Guardian for a Threshold

The Nghê is traditionally placed rather than simply displayed — chosen to watch over a new home, business, or meaningful space.

  • Housewarmings — a guardian for a new home
  • Business openings — placed near an office or storefront entrance
  • Collectors of Asian mythology — especially those who already own Qilin or Pixiu pieces
  • Collectors of Vietnamese art and heritage

The Male + Female Pair makes an especially meaningful gift because the two figures are designed as complementary guardians.

FAQs

❓ What is the difference between the Male and Female Nghê?
✦ The most recognizable distinction is the horn. The Male Nghê has a horn, while the Female Nghê does not. They can be purchased individually or together as a pair.
❓ Is a Nghê the same as a Qilin or Pixiu?
✦ No. They are related in their protective and mythical roles, but the Nghê is a distinctly Vietnamese guardian creature with its own iconography and cultural history.
❓ Should I buy one Nghê or the pair?
✦ A single Nghê makes a strong statement piece and is ideal for a smaller space. The Male + Female Pair is the traditional choice for creating a balanced guardian display at an entrance or on either side of a feature such as a fireplace.
❓ Is this statue actually hand-carved?
✦ Yes. Each Nghê is 100% hand-carved using chisels, with no CNC or machine assistance. The individual details and natural variations are part of what makes every statue unique.
❓ How is this different from resin Nghê, Qilin, or Pixiu figures?
✦ This Nghê is carved from a single block of solid African Padauk, rather than being produced from a mold. The natural wood grain, weight, hand-carved texture, and individual carving marks give every piece a character that molded resin cannot reproduce.
❓ Does the wood need special care?
✦ Very little. Dust with a soft, dry cloth and keep the statue away from direct sunlight, AC vents, and radiators. Avoid liquid cleaners. The Padauk will naturally deepen in color as it ages.
