Some statues are modeled after something meant to be seen from miles away. This hand-carved, seated Shakyamuni Buddha — carved by family artisans in Thường Tín village, Hanoi — is modeled after the Great Buddha Dordenma: the 54-meter gilded bronze statue that watches over Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan, from the hillside at Kuensel Phodrang.
🌿 Meaning & Symbolism
The Great Buddha Dordenma
Completed in 2015 after nearly a decade of construction, the Great Buddha Dordenma was built to bring peace and prosperity to the world, and to fulfill prophecies linked to Guru Padmasambhava and the yogi Sonam Sangpo. Its base houses over 100,000 smaller gilded Buddha statues, and beneath the great seated figure itself is a meditation hall used by monks and visitors alike.
Modeled at a scale you can hold rather than one you have to travel to see, this piece brings the same seated Shakyamuni presence — calm, centered, watching over whatever room it sits in — into a home rather than a mountainside.
For a home, this is the statue that says: peace doesn't have to be enormous to be real. It just has to be present.
🌿 The Wood & The Craft
African Padauk is one of Africa's hardest and most dimensionally stable hardwoods — resistant to warping and cracking, and built to hold its form across decades rather than years. Left in its natural finish, the wood carries a warm orange-red tone that deepens gradually toward a richer reddish-brown as it's exposed to light over time.
Every statue is hand-chiseled from a single block by artisans continuing a wood-carving lineage in Thường Tín village across generations, translating the calm, monumental presence of the original into a piece shaped entirely by hand.
🌿 Where to Place It
A home altar, living room shelf, or any space meant to hold a sense of calm — at or above seated eye level.
🪵 Display Base
For the cleanest finished look, we recommend pairing this piece with a matching Ebony wood pedestal base — sold separately — which lifts the statue slightly and gives it a more considered, gallery-ready presence on any shelf or altar.
