Product Description

Shakyamuni Buddha, seated in meditation, one hand holding an alms bowl — carved from a single block of solid African Padauk by family artisans in Thường Tín, Vietnam.

🌿 Meaning & Symbolism
The alms bowl, or Patra, isn't a symbol of want — it holds exactly what's needed, nothing more. For a Western home, the image translates simply: an open bowl, ready to hold what you carry, and just as ready to be set down. Peace is not a distant place you go to — it is a space you create right within your own home.

🌿 The Wood & The Craft
African Padauk is among the hardest hardwoods available, dense enough that the carver must work slowly — every fold of the robe, every curl of the ushnisha is cut by hand, no CNC. The warm reddish-brown grain runs visibly through the piece, proof of a single solid block rather than a resin casting. The wood carries a natural, quietly present scent, and its color deepens gently over years — this is the wood living with you, not aging.

🎁 Gifting
For a mother who built every peaceful corner of your childhood home. For a housewarming, before the furniture is arranged. For a retirement, a promotion, a wood anniversary — for anyone who's earned a moment of quiet.

FAQs

Q: Is this statue really hand-carved — or machine-assisted?
A: 100% hand-carved. Every cut is made by chisel, by hand, by the same family artisans who have practiced this craft in Thường Tín village outside Hà Nội for generations. No CNC. No machine assistance at any stage. The slightly uneven texture visible in close-up photos is not a flaw — it is the fingerprint of handwork. No two pieces are identical.

Q: Why is this Buddha holding an empty bowl?
A: The alms bowl — called Patra in Buddhist tradition — is one of the most significant symbols in early Buddhist practice. The empty bowl represents the art of receiving: meeting the present moment with an open mind rather than a full one. For many people, placing this figure in their home serves as a quiet daily reminder to set something down. To begin again. To hold things without grasping.

Q: What does African Padauk wood look and feel like in person?
A: Heavier than it looks. The color is a warm, natural reddish-brown — closer to chestnut or terracotta than to bright red — and richer in person than in photos. The grain runs visibly down the robe, the mark of a single solid block. The surface where the chisel finished is smooth; where it didn't, a gentle texture makes the piece feel alive in the hand. The tone deepens gently with age — the wood settling, not fading.

Q: Where should I place this statue in my home?
A: Most naturally: a quiet corner of your living room, home office, or meditation space — elevated slightly above eye level when seated. The 20cm figure works well on a desk or bookshelf. The 30cm piece is built to anchor a dedicated altar or console. The one place to avoid: on the floor, or in rooms with high foot traffic and noise. This piece works best where you already go to slow down.

Q: Does the wood scent fade over time?
A: No. Unlike artificial fragrances, the scent of African Padauk lives in the natural oils of the wood itself. It will not fade — it will settle. You may notice it more on warm days, or after gently wiping the surface with a soft, dry cloth. Many describe it as something that softens the room rather than fills it.

Thank you so very much! The statue arrived safely and securely packaged, and the seller made sure every step was communicated and properly updated. I also really appreciate the small extra gift as well! I really recommend the shop and am very happy to have this statue as my home altar's centre piece <3 Thank you Lily!!!

The hand-carved Buddha I ordered, made of padauk wood, arrived today. I can only say: it's beautiful work and very aesthetically pleasing. Exactly what I was looking for for my meditation space. I would like to thank Lily from Viet Nam for the excellent communication, the very good transport packaging, the impeccable delivery, and the beautiful Buddha. May all beings attain liberation!

Compared to the other item I ordered, the sakyamuni statue was less refined, had less definition on the shoulder, arms and foot. The spacing between the arms and the body were not completely separated and overall did not have the same level of artistry, size and value for the item it was intended to replace that broke during shipping. In the future, it would be best not to decide for the client and have clear confirmation and communication.

Hello, thank you so much for the high-quality craftsmanship and meticulous attention to detail of this statuette. The shipping packaging is substantial and prevents any damage during transport. Congratulations on this product, which perfectly matches the description.

The wooden statue is beautifully carved and beat my expectations. I am very pleased to have it in my home. The communication from the seller can be better. Though responsive, the seller forgot to send me photos of the statue before shipment. An email from the seller had stated that I would receive photos. I received a photo after inquiring with the seller but it was of a shipment package. Upon receipt of my package I could clearly tell that the package in the photo was not what I had received. There is some room for improvement for the seller in such matters. In the end, what I received beat my expectations and I am happy with my purchase.
