Product Description

Eyes lowered, a quiet half smile, the right hand raised with thumb and forefinger joined in a small circle. This Thai Buddha is carved by hand from a single block of solid African Padauk, with the skin left in a deep natural brown and the flowing robe finished in warm saffron orange. At 30 cm tall it is a true centrepiece for an altar, a meditation room or a living room console.

🌿 What Does This Buddha's Hand Position Mean?

  • The right hand shows Vitarka Mudra, the gesture of teaching and discussion. The circle made by the thumb and index finger stands for the Wheel of Dharma: a teaching with no beginning and no end, passed on through calm, clear words.
  • The left hand rests open in the lap, palm up, in the spirit of meditation. Together the two hands say: first find stillness, then share what you have understood.
  • The figure follows the Thai tradition of Buddha images, with a slender rounded ushnisha, finely carved snail-shell curls, long earlobes and a robe draped over the left shoulder, leaving the right shoulder bare. It sits in full lotus, the soles of both feet turned upward.

🪵 What Wood Is This Buddha Statue Carved From?

  • Carved from a single block of solid African Padauk, a dense, richly grained hardwood valued across Southeast Asia for its strength and warmth.
  • The face, chest, hands and feet keep the wood's natural deep brown. The robe is hand-coloured in saffron orange by the artisans, then sanded and polished back so the grain shows through every fold.
  • Shaped entirely by hand by family artisans in Thuong Tin, Hanoi. No CNC, no mass mold. Look at the hundreds of hair curls, the folds of the robe across the knees and the separate toes: each line is a single deliberate cut, so no two pieces are ever identical.

📏 Dimensions & Feng Shui Placement

· Height: 11.8 in (30 cm)
· Width: 9.8 in (25 cm)
· Depth: 5.1 in (13 cm)

  • A substantial statue, about the height of a standard sheet of paper. It anchors a home altar, mantel, bookshelf, reception desk or meditation corner.
  • Traditionally a Buddha image is kept raised, at or above eye level when seated, and never placed directly on the floor, in a bathroom or under a staircase. The optional carved wood stand lifts the statue to the right height.
  • Facing the main entrance or the east of the room is traditionally believed to welcome calm and clarity into the home.

✨ Choose Your Option

  • Statue Only: the hand-carved Padauk Buddha.
  • Add Base (Deal -30%): adds the carved wooden altar stand with scroll-cut apron and curved legs shown in the photos, at 30% off.

🎁 Is This a Good Housewarming or Meaningful Gift?

  • Yes. It is a meaningful gift for a teacher, a mentor, a meditation or yoga practitioner, or anyone who leads and guides others, since the Vitarka gesture honours the act of teaching.
  • Also a beautiful first piece for a new home, an office opening, a retirement, or for someone looking for a fresh, calm start.

FAQs

Q: What does Vitarka Mudra mean?
A: Vitarka Mudra is the gesture of teaching and discussion. The right hand is raised with the thumb and index finger forming a circle, which represents the Wheel of Dharma and the continuous flow of wisdom. It honours teachers and the sharing of understanding.

Q: Is this a Thai Buddha statue?
A: Yes, it follows the Thai style of Buddha images: slender ushnisha, snail-shell curls, robe over the left shoulder and full lotus posture. It is hand carved in Vietnam by artisans in Thuong Tin, Hanoi.

Q: How big is it?
A: About 11.8 in (30 cm) tall, 9.8 in (25 cm) wide and 5.1 in (13 cm) deep. As each piece is hand carved, allow small variations of about 0.5 to 1 cm.

Q: Where should I place it?
