Product Description

Knee drawn up, cheek laid on folded hands, eyes closed in a faint, contented smile. This sleeping Buddha is carved by hand from one solid block of African Padauk, 30 cm tall and around 4.5 kg, and it carries a feeling most of us forget to make room for: the moment you finally put everything down.

🌿 What Does the Sleeping Buddha Mean?

  • Best known as the Sleeping Buddha, and also called the Resting, Thinking or Dreaming Buddha, this seated, head-on-knee figure is a much-loved form in Thai-style Buddhist decor. It speaks of rest after effort, quiet reflection and the gentle art of letting go.
  • Despite the name, he is not lying down. The Reclining Buddha lies on his side and marks the Buddha's final passing; this one sits upright with his head on his knee, eyes closed for a moment. It is a pause in the middle of the path: proof that even the Awakened One stopped to breathe.
  • Every classical sign is here: the snail-shell curls, the urna between the brows for inner sight, and the long earlobes of a prince who left his jewels behind. The face is young and soft, closer to a peaceful nap than a lesson, which is why it tends to soften any room it sits in.

🪵 The Wood & The Craft

  • Solid African Padauk, single block. One of the densest tropical hardwoods used for carving. You feel the difference the second you lift it: at about 4.5 kg it is several times heavier than a resin or softwood figure of the same size.
  • Two-tone, hand-finished. After carving, the skin is hand-toned a deep cocoa brown and the robe a warm saffron amber, then polished back so the wood grain glows through. Raised floral rosettes on both knees and carved lotus bands on the sleeves add texture you can feel with your fingertips.
  • 100% hand chisel. Carved by a woodcarving family in Thuong Tin, Hanoi, a district that has shaped wood for generations. No CNC, no mold, so tone and small details vary from piece to piece.

🏡 Where to Place It

  • Bedroom or reading corner: the natural home for a figure about rest, traditionally believed to support calmer evenings.
  • Desk or study shelf: slightly above eye level, a small reminder to stop and breathe between tasks.
  • Entryway or living room: in feng shui, a raised Buddha facing the front door is traditionally believed to greet the home with calm energy.
  • Keep it raised and clean: never directly on the floor, in a bathroom or facing one. The optional carved base lifts it to the right height.

✨ Choose Your Option

  • Statue Only: the hand-carved sleeping Buddha.
  • Add Base (Deal -30%): adds the matching carved square wood base, packed together and ready to display.

🎁 A Gift That Says "You Can Stop Now"

  • For the friend who never switches off, the new parent, the carer, the nurse after night shifts, or anyone coming back from burnout.
  • For a first home, a retirement, or a Christmas gift that will still be on the shelf in twenty years.

📦 Care & Packaging

Dust with a soft, dry cloth; avoid water and sprays, which can mark the hand-applied finish. Keep about 1 m away from heaters and air-con vents. Each statue (and base, if chosen) is wrapped individually, padded for international transit and boxed. Free shipping worldwide from Hanoi, Vietnam.

FAQs

Q: Is it solid wood or resin?
A: Solid African Padauk, carved from a single block. The weight is the easy test: about 4.5 kg (9.9 lb) for the statue alone, far heavier than resin or softwood versions of this pose.

Q: Is the colour natural or painted?
A: Both tones are hand-applied over the solid wood after carving, then polished back so the grain shows. Because each one is finished by hand, tones vary slightly from the photos.

Q: It's called a Sleeping Buddha. Is it lying down?
A: No. This Sleeping Buddha sits upright, resting his head on folded hands over a raised knee, eyes closed. It is a symbol of rest and reflection. The Reclining Buddha, which lies on his side, is a different figure that represents the Buddha's final passing.

Q: Is the base included?
A: Only with the "Add Base (Deal -30%)" option, which adds the matching 20 × 20 cm carved base at 30% off.

Q: Will the wood crack in a heated or air-conditioned home?
A: Keep it about 1 m (3 ft) from heaters, fireplaces and air-con vents and out of strong direct sun. In very dry months a humidifier helps keep solid wood stable.

Q: How do I care for it?
A: Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid water, sprays and chemical cleaners.
