Some figures on a shelf are there to steady your resolve, not just your mood. This hand-carved Bodhidharma — known in Vietnam as Đạt Ma Tổ Sư — is solid African Padauk, carved by family artisans in Thường Tín village, Hanoi, seated with the fixed, unflinching gaze he's known for.
🌿 Meaning & Symbolism: Who Was Bodhidharma?
Bodhidharma is credited with carrying Chan — what would become Zen — Buddhism from India into China, and, by legend, with founding the physical training tradition later associated with Shaolin monks. He is said to have sat facing a wall in meditation for nine years without moving, and it's this image — wide, unwavering eyes, a bearded, weathered face, total stillness — that this statue is carved to hold.
When the Emperor of China asked what merit he'd earned by building temples and sponsoring monks, Bodhidharma is said to have answered plainly: none at all. Merit, in his teaching, isn't accumulated through gesture. It's built through direct, disciplined practice.
For the modern world, he is the figure that says: the sitting itself is the achievement.
🌿 The Wood & The Craft
African Padauk is dense, dimensionally stable, and holds sharp carved detail — the deep-set eyes, the heavy brow, the folds of a worn robe — without the softening or cracking lighter woods can develop over time. Left in its natural finish, the wood shows its characteristic warm red-orange tone, which will deepen gradually with age and light.
Every statue is hand-chiseled from a single block by artisans continuing a carving lineage passed down through families in Thường Tín village. The slightly uneven texture in the face and robe is not a flaw — it's the direct evidence of a person, working by hand, making a deliberate choice with every pass of the chisel.
🌿 Where to Place It
A desk, a study, a martial arts training space, or anywhere discipline needs a visual anchor. Bodhidharma is traditionally kept at eye level or above, facing outward into the room rather than tucked into a corner.
🪵 Display Base
For the cleanest finished look, we recommend pairing this piece with a matching Ebony wood pedestal base — sold separately — which lifts the statue slightly and gives it a more considered, gallery-ready presence on any shelf or altar.
