- What Does Ksitigarbha (Jizo) Symbolize?
Of all the Bodhisattvas in Mahayana Buddhism, Jizo made the most human vow: to stay — not in celestial realms, but here, in the hardest places, until no one suffers alone. His name, Ksitigarbha, means "Earth Store" or "Womb of the Earth" — the one who holds, absorbs, and steadies.
- He wears the Five-Tathagata Crown of transcendent wisdom. In one hand, his six-ring Khakkhara staff — traditionally used to gently warn small creatures of an approaching monk's footsteps, and said to open whatever has been closed too long. In the other, the Cintamani, the wish-fulfilling jewel that dispels the darkness of confusion.
- In East Asian tradition, Jizo is the protector of travelers, children, and those moving through loss. In the language of 2026, he is something rarer: a figure who does not ask you to be better, do more, or arrive anywhere. He is already at the destination. He is already still.
