This statue is carved from a single block of Deep Red Padauk — one of Southeast Asia's hardest and most durable hardwoods, prized for centuries in Vietnamese sacred woodwork for both its beauty and its quiet, warm-present scent.
The artisan's family has worked with this wood for generations in Thường Tín, Hà Nội — one of northern Vietnam's oldest woodcarving communities. There are no machines involved. Every surface — from the lotus petals curving upward to the folds of the robe and the gentle crease at the corner of his eye — was shaped by hand chisel, pass by pass.
