- This is Maitreya — the Buddha of the future — rendered in the beloved form of Budai, the 10th-century Chan monk whose laugh carried ten thousand years of stillness. Seated not on gold coins or a throne, but on celestial clouds (Xiangyun), he embodies something rarer than fortune: weightlessness.
- The clouds beneath him are not decoration. In Buddhist and Taoist tradition, they are the vehicle of the liberated — those who have learned to rise above the pull of daily anxieties without leaving the ground. His hands rest open on his lap, palms facing upward: the gesture of letting go and remaining open. His rounded belly holds the world's sorrows — and chooses, again and again, to smile anyway.
