A seated Buddha doesn't ask for anything from the room it's in — it simply holds a point of stillness within it. This hand-carved Shakyamuni Buddha, carved from solid Vietnamese cypress by family artisans in Thuong Tin village, Hanoi, depicts the historical Buddha in classic seated meditation.
🌿 Meaning & Symbolism
This is Shakyamuni — Siddhartha Gautama after his enlightenment — shown in seated meditation, the posture most associated with the moment awakening was reached beneath the Bodhi tree. It's one of the most universally recognized images in Buddhist art, precisely because of its simplicity: no elaborate gesture, no accompanying object, just a figure fully present.
For the modern world, this is the statue that says: stillness itself is the practice. Nothing more needs to be added.
🌿 The Wood & The Craft
Vietnamese cypress carves cleanly at a finer scale than denser hardwoods, letting the robe lines and facial features stay crisp without the wood fighting the chisel — part of why it's a longstanding choice for devotional carving in Vietnam, alongside its natural fragrance.
Hand-carved from a single block by artisan families in Thuong Tin, with no CNC involvement. Small variations between pieces reflect the individual hand that carved each one.
🎁 Gifting
A common choice for a meditation teacher, a new yoga studio, or a first home altar — and a fitting Vesak Day or housewarming gift for someone building a quieter home.
Fits naturally on a home altar, a bookshelf, or a work desk — anywhere it can sit slightly elevated and undisturbed. Pairs well with warm wood tones and simple, uncluttered surroundings.
