Some statues carry the weight of a specific place and century. This hand-carved standing Buddha — carved by family artisans in Thường Tín village, Hanoi — is modeled after one of the most influential Buddha images ever made: the 5th-century Gupta-period standing Buddha from Sarnath, now held in the British Museum.
🌿 Meaning & Symbolism
The Sarnath Buddha and the Birth of a Style
Sarnath, the site of the Buddha's first sermon, became the artistic capital of the Gupta period (4th–6th century CE) — the era art historians consider the high point of classical Indian Buddhist sculpture. The Sarnath school developed a distinctive look: a body wrapped in a transparent, almost weightless robe with no carved folds, downcast eyes suggesting deep inward calm, and a serenity that later spread across Buddhist art from Tang-dynasty China to Heian Japan to Sukhothai-era Thailand.
The original sandstone figure, now in the British Museum, stands with the right hand raised in Abhaya Mudra — the gesture of fearlessness, offered as reassurance and protection to anyone who approaches — while the left hand rests at the side holding the edge of the robe.
For a home, this is the statue that says: presence itself can be a form of protection.
🌿 The Wood & The Craft
Carved in solid African Padauk, a dense, dimensionally stable hardwood well suited to holding the fine, close-fitting drapery lines this style is known for, without the warping or cracking softer woods develop over time. Left in its natural finish, the wood's warm orange-red tone will deepen gradually with light and age.
Every statue is hand-chiseled from a single block by artisans continuing a carving lineage passed through families in Thường Tín village for generations — translating a 1,500-year-old stone original into a piece shaped entirely by hand tools.
🌿 Where to Place It
A shelf, desk, or entryway — at or above eye level, on a stable surface given the standing pose. Works particularly well as a piece for anyone with an interest in Buddhist art history alongside its devotional use.
🪵 Display Base
For the cleanest finished look, we recommend pairing this piece with a matching Ebony wood pedestal base — sold separately — which lifts the statue slightly and gives it a more considered, gallery-ready presence on any shelf or altar.
