Product Description
Some figures on an altar are there to comfort, not just to inspire. This hand-carved Kshitigarbha Bodhisattva — known across Vietnam as Địa Tạng, and in China as Dìzàng — is solid African Padauk, carved by family artisans in Thường Tín village, Hanoi.
🌿 Meaning & Symbolism: Who Is Kshitigarbha?
Kshitigarbha made a vow unlike almost any other figure in Buddhist tradition: to remain in the world, guiding beings through its darkest realms, until every hell is emptied.
"Not until the hells are empty do I vow to become a Buddha."
That vow is why he is honored as the protector of the deceased, of travelers on difficult roads, and — especially in East Asian tradition — of children. He is usually shown as a shaven-headed monk, carrying a staff whose rings are said to sound as he walks, so that no living being is struck by it unknowingly.
For the home, he is the figure people turn to during grief, during a loved one's illness, or simply when they want a quiet guardian presence nearby.
🌿 The Wood & The Craft
African Padauk is prized for its density and dimensional stability — it resists warping and holds fine carved detail, like the folds of a monk's robe or the small features of a staff, far better than softer woods. Left in its natural finish, the wood's orange-red tone will deepen gradually with age and light exposure, which is expected and part of owning solid hardwood rather than a flaw to prevent.
Every piece is hand-chiseled by artisans from families who have carved in Thường Tín for generations, working from a single block of wood rather than assembled parts. The very slight asymmetries you may notice are the signature of a human hand at work.
🌿 Where to Place It
A home altar, a bedside shelf, or near an entryway — Kshitigarbha is traditionally kept where he can "watch over" the household and those who leave and return to it. Keep him elevated, not on the floor, and away from cluttered surfaces.
🪵 Display Base
For the cleanest finished look, we recommend pairing this piece with a matching thick African Padauk lotus base — sold separately — which lifts the statue slightly and gives it a more considered, gallery-ready presence on any shelf or altar.
🎁 Gifting
This is a considered gift for someone grieving a loss, caring for an aging or unwell family member, or simply someone who travels often and could use a sense of being watched over. It also suits:
- A family observing a memorial or death anniversary
- A new parent, given his association with children's protection
- A housewarming gift for someone setting up their first home altar

FAQs
FAQs
✦ Yes — Kshitigarbha is the Sanskrit name; Địa Tạng is the Vietnamese name; Dìzàng is the Chinese name; Jizō is the Japanese name. Same figure, same vow, honored across nearly every East Asian Buddhist tradition.
❓ Is this hand-carved or resin-cast?
✦ Entirely hand-carved from a single block of solid African Padauk — no resin, no CNC. Look closely at the robe folds and you'll see the small variations that only hand-chisel work produces.
❓ Where should I place this statue at home?
✦ Traditionally on a home altar or a shelf near the entryway, elevated above the floor, and away from high-traffic clutter so the piece can hold its presence.
❓ How do I care for it?
✦ Dust weekly with a dry, soft cloth. Avoid direct sun, AC vents, and liquid cleaners. A drop of natural wood oil every six months keeps the finish healthy.
❓ Can I get this in a different size or wood?
✦ This design is also available in cypress on request — message me before ordering so I can confirm timing.
