Product Description

Some statues are carved not in stillness but in motion — a single step forward, toward you. This hand-carved Amida Buddha — the Japanese name for Amitābha, standing on a lotus base — is solid African Padauk, carved by family artisans in Thường Tín village, Hanoi.

🌿 Meaning & Symbolism

Who Is Amida Buddha?

Amitābha, known in Japan as Amida, is the Buddha of Infinite Light and Infinite Life, central to Pure Land Buddhism, one of the most widely practiced traditions across East Asia. He is said to preside over the Western Pure Land, a realm free of suffering, and to have vowed that anyone who calls on him with sincere faith would be welcomed there.

The standing pose on a lotus, rather than the seated meditation pose most Buddha statues take, is deliberate — this is Amida depicted mid-descent, arriving to welcome the faithful rather than waiting in stillness for them to arrive. It's one of the most recognizable images in Japanese Pure Land art, known as raigō, "the welcoming descent."

For a home, this is the figure that says: you don't have to reach enlightenment alone. Something is already coming toward you.

🌿 The Wood & The Craft

African Padauk holds the long, straight lines of a standing figure well — the fall of the robe, the lotus petals underfoot — while resisting the warping that can distort a tall, narrow carving over time. Left in its natural finish, the wood carries a warm orange-red tone that will deepen gradually with age and light exposure.

Every piece is hand-chiseled from a single block by artisans from families carving in Thường Tín village for generations. The standing form is more demanding to balance and carve than a seated statue, and any small asymmetry in the drape of the robe is the mark of that handwork — not an error to correct.

🌿 Where to Place It

A tall shelf, an entryway console, or a home altar with enough vertical clearance to let the standing form read fully. Because of its height and the forward lean of the pose, keep it on a stable, flat surface, away from the edge.

🪵 Display Base

For the cleanest finished look, we recommend pairing this piece with a matching Ebony wood pedestal base — sold separately — which lifts the statue slightly and gives it a more considered, gallery-ready presence on any shelf or altar.

🎁 Gifting

This piece suits moments of transition and remembrance more than everyday decor:

  • A memorial or death anniversary, honoring the promise of a peaceful passing
  • Someone caring for a dying or seriously ill family member

FAQs

❓ Is Amida the same as Amitabha Buddha?
✦ Yes — Amitābha is the Sanskrit name; Amida is the Japanese reading of the same figure, most closely associated with Japanese Pure Land Buddhism (Jōdo Shū and Jōdo Shinshū), which is why this standing, welcoming pose is often called by its Japanese name.
❓ Why is this Buddha standing instead of seated?
✦ The standing pose on a lotus represents Amida in the act of coming to welcome the faithful into the Pure Land — a different symbolic moment than the stillness of a seated meditating Buddha.
❓ Is this hand-carved or resin-cast?
✦ Fully hand-carved from a single block of solid African Padauk — no resin, no CNC. The standing form is carved with extra care for balance and stability.
❓ How do I care for this statue?
✦ Dust weekly with a soft, dry cloth. A drop of natural wood oil every six months keeps the finish healthy. Keep out of direct sun and away from AC vents.
