🌿 Meaning & Symbolism
Who Is Maitreya?
Maitreya is described across Buddhist tradition as the future Buddha — the one who will appear on Earth once the current teachings have faded, to rediscover and re-teach the path to enlightenment for a new age. He isn't a figure of nostalgia or of the present moment; he's a figure of continuity, a promise that the path doesn't end with any one era or any one teacher.
The standing posture here reflects readiness rather than repose — a Buddha not yet arrived, but already in motion toward the world.
For a home, he is the figure that says: even when things feel finished, something is still on its way.
🌿 The Wood & The Craft
African Padauk holds the long vertical lines of a standing figure well, resisting the warping that can distort a tall, narrow carving over years of temperature and humidity change. Left in its natural finish, the wood shows a warm orange-red tone that will deepen gradually with age and light.
Every statue is hand-chiseled from a single block by artisans from families carving in Thường Tín village for generations. The standing form takes particular care to balance and finish, and small variations in the drape of the robe are the evidence of that handwork.
🌿 Where to Place It
An entryway console, a study shelf, or anywhere a fresh start deserves a visual marker — at or above eye level, on a stable surface.
🪵 Display Base
For the cleanest finished look, we recommend pairing this piece with a matching Ebony wood pedestal base — sold separately — which lifts the statue slightly and gives it a more considered, gallery-ready presence on any shelf or altar.
🎁 Gifting
Maitreya suits moments of transition more than any single occasion:
- A graduation, new job, or the start of a new chapter
- Someone rebuilding after a difficult period
- A housewarming gift for a genuinely fresh start — a first home, a new city
- Vesak Day, alongside reflections on the Buddha's teachings past and future

FAQs
FAQs
✦ No — the jolly, big-bellied figure often called the Laughing Buddha is a folk depiction of Budai, a Chinese monk later associated with Maitreya in popular tradition. This statue depicts Maitreya in his classical, dignified form as the prophesied future Buddha.
❓ Is this hand-carved or machine-made?
✦ Fully hand-carved from a single block of solid African Padauk — no CNC or machine assistance.
❓ Where should I place this statue?
✦ At or above eye level, somewhere associated with new beginnings — an entryway, a study, or a shelf you see often. Keep it out of direct sun and away from AC vents.
❓ How do I care for it?
✦ Dust weekly with a soft, dry cloth. A drop of natural wood oil every six months keeps the finish healthy. No liquid cleaners.
❓ Is this available in cypress or a different size?
✦ Yes — a seated 13cm cypress version of Maitreya is also available; message me for other size or wood requests.
