There's a particular calm in an image of someone who has learned to want nothing more than what's already in their hands. This hand-carved Shakyamuni Buddha — seated in meditation, holding an alms bowl — is carved from solid Kiaat wood by family artisans in Thuong Tin village, Hanoi.
🌿 Meaning & Symbolism
This depicts Shakyamuni Buddha — the historical Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama, after his enlightenment — seated in meditation with the alms bowl resting in his lap. The bowl is one of Buddhism's oldest symbols: a reminder of a life stripped down to essentials, sustained by what is freely given rather than accumulated.
Held in stillness, it reads less as a container and more as a posture toward the world — open hands, no grasping.
For the modern world, this is the statue that says: contentment doesn't come from having more. It comes from needing less.
🌿 The Wood & The Craft
Kiaat wood — Pterocarpus angolensis, also known as Mukwa or Muninga, a close relative of true African Padauk — is dense and richly grained, chosen here for its weight and durability — a material that holds fine carved detail, like the folds of the robe pooling around the bowl, far better than the lighter woods or resins used in mass-produced versions.
Every cut is made by hand by artisan families continuing a woodcarving tradition in Thuong Tin, carved from a single block. The subtle variation you'll see between pieces is the mark of handwork, not a defect — no two statues are ever quite the same.
🎁 Gifting
A natural gift for a meditation teacher, a yoga practitioner, or anyone setting up a first home altar. Also fitting for Vesak Day or as a housewarming piece meant to set a tone before the rest of the room fills in.
Well suited to a home altar, a meditation corner, or a desk shelf — somewhere it can be seen during a pause in the day. Keep it elevated rather than on the floor, and away from cluttered, high-traffic surfaces.
