Some figures are kept near a doorway or a cash register for a very specific reason. This hand-carved Arahant Sivali — solid cypress wood, carved by family artisans in Thường Tín village, Hanoi — is one of the most quietly practical statues in Buddhist tradition.
🌿 Meaning & Symbolism: Who Was Sivali?
Sivali was a direct disciple of the Buddha, and the Buddha himself is recorded as having declared him foremost among all his followers in receiving offerings — no matter where Sivali traveled, generosity and provision seemed to find him without effort. That reputation is why he's honored across Thai, Burmese, Lao, and Sri Lankan Buddhism as a guardian of travelers, and a bringer of steady abundance to homes and businesses alike.
He's typically shown as a monk, staff and fan in hand, in the calm, unhurried posture of someone who has never had to worry about what tomorrow brings.
For a home or shop, he is the figure that says: what you need has a way of finding you.
🌿 The Wood & The Craft
Cypress is a naturally aromatic, straight-grained wood, long favored in temple carving across East and Southeast Asia — both for its light, honey-gold tone and for its natural resistance to insects and decay, which comes from the wood's own oils rather than any applied treatment. It's a lighter, gentler material than Padauk, in both weight and color, and pairs well with brighter, more open spaces.
Every statue is hand-chiseled from a single block by artisans continuing a wood-carving lineage in Thường Tín village across generations. The subtle variation in surface texture is the fingerprint of hand tool work — not a flaw, but the mark of an actual person shaping actual wood.
🌿 Where to Place It
Near an entryway, a home altar, or — for those who run a small business — close to where money changes hands: a register, a desk drawer, a shop shelf. Keep him elevated and visible, not tucked away.
🪵 Display Base
For the cleanest finished look, we recommend pairing this piece with a matching Ebony wood pedestal base — sold separately — which lifts the statue slightly and gives it a more considered, gallery-ready presence on any shelf or altar.
