Who Was the Buddhist King of Vietnam?
Tran Nhan Tong (1258–1308) was a Vietnamese emperor who led his people to victory against the Mongol army — then walked away from his throne. He retreated to Yen Tu Mountain, founded Vietnam's first indigenous Zen school, and spent the rest of his life teaching one radical idea: you do not need to escape the world to find peace within it.
His philosophy, Cư Trần Lạc Đạo — "living joyfully in the world" — is widely seen as a forerunner of what the West now calls Engaged Buddhism, the tradition carried forward by
