Some gestures are precise enough to have a name of their own. This hand-carved Amida Buddha, standing on a lotus base — carved by family artisans in Thường Tín village, Hanoi — holds one of the most specific and recognized hand positions in Japanese Buddhist art: the raigō-in, the "welcoming mudra."
🌿 Meaning & Symbolism
The Welcoming Mudra
The right hand is raised, palm outward; the left hand extends downward, palm outward; and on both hands, the tip of the thumb touches the tip of the index finger. This is the raigō-in — the gesture Amida is believed to display while descending from the Pure Land to personally welcome the dying at the moment of death.
During Japan's Heian and Kamakura periods, this exact combination — right hand up, left hand down, both a step further specified by which fingers touch the thumb — became formalized into a system representing nine possible grades of rebirth in the Pure Land. The thumb-to-index-finger version shown here corresponds to the highest of those nine grades.
For a home, this is the statue that says: something is already on its way to meet you.
🌿 The Wood & The Craft
Carved in solid African Padauk, chosen for its density and stability, which holds the raised and lowered arm positions of this pose without the risk of warping thinner wood can develop over time. Left in its natural finish, the wood shows a warm orange-red tone that deepens gradually with age and light exposure.
Every statue is hand-chiseled from a single block by artisans continuing a wood-carving lineage in Thường Tín village across generations — including the precise finger positioning this specific mudra requires.
🌿 Where to Place It
A bedside shelf, home altar, or memorial corner — traditionally kept at or above eye level, in a quiet part of the home rather than a high-traffic area.
🪵 Display Base
For the cleanest finished look, we recommend pairing this piece with a matching Ebony wood pedestal base — sold separately — which lifts the statue slightly and gives it a more considered, gallery-ready presence on any shelf or altar.
