Some statues capture a moment; this one captures a method. This hand-carved, seated, meditating Bodhidharma — solid African Padauk, carved by family artisans in Thường Tín village, Hanoi — sits in the exact posture he's said to have held, without moving, for nine years.
🌿 Meaning & Symbolism
The Founder of Sitting Meditation
Bodhidharma is remembered less for what he taught in words and more for what he insisted couldn't be taught in words at all. Where earlier Buddhist practice in China had centered on studying and reciting sutras, Bodhidharma's core teaching was that awakening comes through direct experience — sitting in meditation, facing a wall, watching the mind without interference. This practice, known as bìguān, "wall-contemplation," is considered the direct root of what would become zazen, the seated meditation at the heart of Zen practice today.
This piece shows him in that posture — not standing in confrontation, not mid-legend, simply seated, doing the one thing his entire teaching rests on.
For a meditation space, this is the statue that says: understanding isn't the point. Sitting is.
🌿 The Wood & The Craft
African Padauk is one of Africa's hardest and most dimensionally stable hardwoods — it resists warping and holds fine detail, like the deep folds of a seated robe or the set of a still, steady face, without the shifting softer woods can develop over years. Left in its natural finish, the wood carries a warm orange-red tone that will deepen gradually with age and light exposure.
Every statue is hand-chiseled from a single block by artisans continuing a wood-carving lineage in Thường Tín village across generations. The subtle asymmetry you may notice in the robe or brow is the mark of that handwork — proof of a person's deliberate choices, not a flaw.
🌿 Where to Place It
A meditation cushion corner, a desk, or a shelf you sit near during your own practice — at or above eye level when seated, facing the room rather than a wall.
🪵 Display Base
For the cleanest finished look, we recommend pairing this piece with a matching Ebony wood pedestal base — sold separately — which lifts the statue slightly and gives it a more considered, gallery-ready presence on any shelf or altar.
🎁 Gifting

- Vesak Day, or any occasion honoring direct practice over ritual
