This hand-carved Maitreya Buddha, seated — solid cypress wood, carved by family artisans in Thường Tín village, Hanoi — brings the same quiet promise as its standing counterpart into a smaller, more intimate scale.

🌿 Meaning & Symbolism

Who Is Maitreya?

Maitreya is the Buddha yet to come — prophesied across Buddhist tradition to appear once the present teachings have faded, and to rediscover the path to enlightenment for a new age. Where a seated meditating Buddha often represents stillness already achieved, a seated Maitreya represents patience: the readiness of someone who knows their moment is still ahead of them.

For a small shelf or a desk corner, he is the figure that says: good things are still allowed to be on their way.

🌿 The Wood & The Craft

Cypress is a naturally aromatic, fine-grained wood with a light, honey-gold color, long used in temple carving across East and Southeast Asia for both its pleasant scent and its natural resistance to insects and decay. At this smaller scale, its lighter weight and softer tone make for an easy, unobtrusive presence rather than a statement piece.

Every statue is hand-chiseled from a single block by artisans continuing a carving lineage passed through families in Thường Tín village for generations. Even at 13cm, the same hand-tool process applies — no shortcuts taken because of the smaller size.

🌿 Where to Place It

A desk, a small altar corner, a bookshelf, or anywhere space is limited but you still want a considered presence — at or above eye level where possible.

🪵 Display Base

For the cleanest finished look, we recommend pairing this piece with a matching Ebony wood pedestal base — sold separately — which lifts the statue slightly and gives it a more considered, gallery-ready presence on any shelf or altar.

🎁 Gifting

Its smaller scale makes this an easy, low-pressure gift for:

A coworker or new employee starting a role

A student beginning a course of study

A housewarming gift for a small apartment or first home

Anyone who appreciates meaning without needing a large piece to hold it

https://stilllotusstudio.com/products/hand-carved-cypress-wood-maitreya-buddha-statue-zen-desk-decor-luck-symbol-2
